761d6ddf-141d-45c6-a5f1-e2549a1f3a1dIn the USA in 1984, President Ronald Reagan named July as National Ice Cream Month and the third Sunday of July as National Ice Cream Day in recognition of ice cream as a fun and nutritious food eaten by over 90 percent of the US population. The tradition has stuck and every July in the USA, people celebrate National Ice Cream Month with a variety of fun, ice cream-themed activities.

In recent years, ice cream has gained in popularity on both sides of the Atlantic with the UK ice cream market being one of the fastest growing in Europe (after Germany). Everyone loves ice cream, but there’s a growing demand for novelty products and innovative flavours.

Dolcino is 1!

It seems fitting that July is also the month in which we first opened Dolcino’s doors in 2015, and for that reason it’s a special time for us, too. We will have our anniversary on 15 July and, not to be outdone by the Americans, we’ll hold our own National Ice Cream Month celebrations all month too. To mark our first birthday, we’ve decided to hold our very own ‘most innovative gelato flavour’ competition at Dolcino.

Invent a flavour – competition

To participate, either post your idea to one of our social media channels or let us know on the competition postcards in store – you’ll find these on the lean bar around the Vespa in the centre of the store. The competition will run 1-14 July with the winner announced on 15 July and awarded their prize on National Ice Cream Day on Sunday 17 July.

Ideas for flavours could come from anything but in the past, cake-based flavours have been popular – for example, what about a Black Forest Gateau flavour? And you only have to visit us on a Saturday afternoon to see how popular our Lemon Cheesecake or Cherry Bakewell flavours are! (Put it this way, you have to get up early to taste them.) Beverage flavours are always popular too, for instance, Coffee and Mocha gelato are firm favourites, and sometimes we’ll do an alcofrolic flavour too. Who remembers our Prosecco gelato from last summer? Finally, berries and fruit flavours are always well-loved, but maybe you’ll come up with a berry-based flavour that’s just that little bit different.

Artisan gelato

Because we make all our ice cream in store using Italian gelato recipes this means two things:

1. It’s gelato rather than ice cream.

Read about the difference in quality here

2. We can easily make your newly invented flavour.

It also means our gelato is of the highest quality –  it’s freshly made on site and full of flavour, and your new flavour will be too!

Be sure to tag your competition entry with #DolcinoGelato. Let’s get innovating!

Terms and conditions: The winner will be notified by email by 11 a.m. on Friday 15 July 2015 and they will receive their prize of either 2 x 1kg tubs of Dolcino gelato or 2 x Dolcino desserts of their choice on Sunday 17 July 2015. The prize cannot be exchanged for cash and must be picked up from or consumed at Dolcino, Loughborough on 17 July 2015.
